Exploring Durham just got easier with a new bus service – arriving this summer! Here’s everything you need to know.

The perfect way to explore Durham County

The Durham Explorer bus offers three routes connecting Durham City to a range of visitor destinations, with many venues also offering discounts to those who arrive by bus.  

It will run on weekends and bank holidays between 23 May and 31 August 2026.

All Explorer buses have accessible access and dogs also allowed on board too, making it a fantastic and affordable way to travel around the county – not to mention being better for the environment!

Where does the Durham Explorer bus go?

When it comes for things to see and do in Durham, you spoiled for choice: from historic market towns and peaceful countryside to top visitor destinations, Durham County has them all!

How much does the Durham Explorer cost?

There are a few ticket options available:

Single journeys: A single adult journey will cost just £2.50, with people aged 21 and under travelling for £1.  

Day tickets: An adult day ticket is available in County Durham for £6, allowing unlimited bus travel.

Regionwide tickets: Regionwide adult day tickets for bus and Metro travel cost £7.50, while regionwide day tickets for young people cost £3.

Kids go free: Children under 11 can also travel without charge during the school holidays as part of the Kids Go Free initiative: up to three children can travel for free when accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket or a concessionary pass holder.

Who is behind Durham Explorer?

The bus service was commissioned by Durham County Council and is funded by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority. It aims to help make bus travel more affordable and attractive for both local people and visitors.
